Design Engineer
POSITION: Power Supply Ballast Engineer, electronic

REPORTS TO: Engineering Vice President

EXPERIENCE: Three to five years as lead engineer or major assistant designing linear and switching power supplies in the 10-100 and/or 5,000 – 10,000 watt range using 120,208,240 single and three phase input voltages. The ideal candidates will have working knowledge of FET and IGBT devices as well as bi-polar switching devices. High frequency (10-100 kHz) magnetic design experience a plus (transformers and inductors) using ferrite material up to EE-55 in size as is a comprehensive knowledge of components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes etc. including common SMD. He or she should have experience supervising technicians in bread boarding and testing the designs and preparing written reports.

Experience in the design of electronic ballast fluorescent and HID electronic ballasts and control systems using RISC controllers such as PIC.

Hands on experience using common assembly and production tools such as soldering irons, lead forming equipment, wave solder machines, reflow ovens, pick and place as well as discrete automatic assembly equipment is very helpful as is the ability to design and lay out schematics and PCBs using software such as PROTEL.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This self starter will be required to accept project assignments and be responsible for the project from start to finish. He or she will work with and under the direction of the company’s engineering management and be capable of shepherding the project through the engineering definition phase and then through the budget, design and production design phases preparing all required documentation including written progress reports. In addition the candidate will prepare written test specifications and test the designs to the appropriate criteria including UL, CSA, VDE and CE.

We are looking for one or more full or part time senior technicians or associate engineers to support our engineers, contract manufacturing and field service.  You must be meticulous, organized, a self starter and able to multi-task.  3 or more years experience but starting positions will be considered depending on your outlook and education..

 

You will be expected to troubleshoot electronic circuits, use scopes and DVMs, do through hole and surface mount rework and prototype assembly, operate simple machine shop tools, follow and write test procedures, document and present findings.  Some domestic and over seas travel may be required. 

 

We value general skills and ability to learn, and do not require experience in our field.  Desirable experience includes: ballasts, high voltage (to 2kV) at 50kHz, FETs, Bipolars, switching power supplies, inductors and transformers, control of 120/277V AC power, running PC based software, PROTEL, Word, Excel, optical and power quality measurements, interfacing with UL, test labs and high volume production, writing and checking ECOs and purchasing prototype parts.
